Accelerate - WSU Employee Development Tools

When Jeneen Conley-Berry, program coordinator, in Procurement & Strategic Sourcing, received an e-mail stating that You have won a free iPad! as a participating Accelerate user…”, she thought she might have a spam mail.  But when she saw the message actually had her name in it, she realized it was for real. 

The office of Organization & Employee Development (OED) announced its Learn & Win Raffle on January 11, 2012.  Any employee that was an Accelerate user through February 29, 2012, would be automatically entered into the drawing for a free iPad.  Accelerate is the on-line Employee Development Resource tool that contains thousands of learning assets that was implemented in August 2011.  On March 1st OED conducted a random drawing for the winner and subsequently congratulated Jeneen.  Project Lead for Accelerate, Diane Siemen, presented Jeneen with the iPad in the presence of her manager Michael Gleason, Associate Director, Procurement.

After presenting the iPad to a beaming Jeneen, the excited winner mentioned how she had heard about the Accelerate program and started browsing around the tool.  She was particularly interested in Microsoft Excel functions and advanced formatting features. “Accelerate has so much to offer. It is a great benefit for any employee,” she said.

Michael Gleason pointed out how Jeneen deals with heavy data extracts in Excel.  And Jeneen agreed,“With sorting huge extracts of data, I wanted to brush-up on my Excel skills and the tools and job aids available are great.”  In addition, Jeneen mentioned that Accelerate gave her a better opportunity to strengthen skills and become a better employee as well as provide professional development tools.  Gleason reiterated the value of the quick reference job aids and how that makes it easier to coach someone on a skill without having to go over and over how to do something. 

Jeneen enthusiastically stated that she had already saved learning resources to her “My Plan” and outlined what she wanted to take in the future.  Michael shared how helpful Accelerate was as far as the topics utilized with LEADS, Wayne State’s performance management system for non-represented employees. He mentioned the savings Accelerate provided, as the department, like many others, doesn’t always have the cash to send employees to training.  “I can benefit from it as well”, Gleason said.  As the Pro Card director, Gleason pointed out they used to get calls for Pro Card exceptions to send employees to Excel training. “We don’t get those requests anymore.”  Jeneen echoed, "This is definitely saving the university money."

Through this award, it has even piqued their interest into looking at the certifications offered by Accelerate, especially Six Sigma as it applies to their department as a whole and in dealing with suppliers.
