Tips for an Effective Mid-Year Progress Review Meeting

Employee

  • Be prepared to provide summaries of your overall performance and specific details
  • Listen to your supervisor’s viewpoint, recognizing that his or her perceptions may be different from yours
  • Ask open-ended questions to better understand your supervisor’s view of your performance
  • Confirm your understanding of your supervisor’s feedback by restating what was said
  • Summarize the meeting
  • Specify any needed follow-up

Supervisor

  • Gather your own data relative to your employee’s performance
  • Listen to your employee; don’t make assumptions about performance
  • Provide balanced feedback
  • Start and end with positive feedback
  • Make sure you have specific examples to support performance feedback. Avoid hearsay
  • Help the employee summarize the meeting
  • Offer on-going help and coaching
