For effective performance planning, here are some tips to guide employees AND supervisors....
Employee

Make sure you have a good understanding of your objectives and how they support the university’s mission and strategic priorities

Identify resources that you need to achieve your objectives; be prepared to discuss them with your supervisor

Ask your supervisor for feedback

Come to the meeting with an open mind and be prepared to receive constructive feedback

Be prepared to make changes to your plan as appropriate

Be sure to raise questions if you have them

Ensure that objectives are S.M.A.R.T.

Review core competencies as they will all be rated at the end of the performance year
Supervisor

Coach employees as they develop his or her objectives

Listen to your employee’s point of view

Openly express your point of view

Ask clarifying questions. Seek to understand the employee’s objectives

Consider special circumstances that may affect objectives

Keep the discussion focused on how the employee can contribute to the university’s strategic priorities
-
Look for common ground if you and your employee disagree
-
Ensure that employee’s objectives are S.M.A.R.T.

Review core competencies as they will all be rated at the end of the performance year
